On Thursday, Team 8 had a go at descriptive writing.
We learned that we had to build a picture in our readers mind by using lots of describing words (adjectives.

The Lions go Contraction Hunting

On Thursday the Lions went on a contraction hunt while they read to the teacher. They found lots! One isn't actually a contraction, but it did have an apostrophe in it!  

Well done guys!

Super Similes

Last week some of Team 8 were learning to describe things using Smilies. - A simile is a figure of speech that compares one thing with another thing of a different kind. 

SOME of us were working with with the teacher, and SOME of us had their listening (eavesdropping) ears switched on, and decided to create smilies all on their own without any of my help!!!

I was super impressed with these writers and I promised them fame right here on the blog.

Sri Lanka

On Thursday Sayuni's Daddy came in for a visit. 

He showed us a powerpoint and answered all our questions about Sri Lanka. 

We are very lucky to have two people in our class who come from Sri Lanka; Sayuni and Anoji.

Did you know that there are 3 different languages in Sri Lanka (Sinhala, Tamil and English)? Sayuni and her family speak Sinhala and Anoji and his family speak Tamil.

Here is Sayuni's Dad holding the Sinhala alphabet

He told us, that to greet other people in Sinhala, we need place our hands together, bow and say "Ayubowan"

Sayuni's mummy came for a visit too, she made us kokis to try. She had made them in the shape of Sri Lanka. They were sweet and crunchy.

Anoji's mummy also joined the party and brought us some Kesari to taste. It was yellow and was also nice and sweet. 

Here we are eating all our traditional Sri Lankan sweets (lot's of us went back for seconds ;-)

Thank you so much mummy's they would have taken AGES to cook and they were soooo delicious!

To finish it all, On Friday we talked about all the things we had learned. Here is our wall display that we made together. Can you remember what the Sri Lankan native bird in the picture is called?

Thank you so much to Sayuni and Anoji's families for coming in and sharing your culture with us. I say it all the time, but Team 8 is so very lucky to have such a supportive whanau like you.

Writing Number Sentences

Wednesday 10th April

WALT: Write number sentences. 

Some children in the class have been working on writing a number sentence. A number sentence needs to have numbers and something to join it together.  It might have a + sign or a - sign and is usually has a = sign. 
Here we are having a go to write our own number sentences.

Collaborative Writing

Today we ditched our writing books and decided to do our writing in teams. This was a first for many of us, and we did lots of learning around sharing, taking turns, staying focused and being brave.

First we were given a 'sea creature' to brainstorm. We had to write down all the describing words (adjectives) we could think of to describe our creature. Look at us writing all by ourselves!

       

We then shared our thoughts with the rest of the class to see if they could help us add more ideas to our brainstorms.

After that Mrs Turner showed us a little 'game' or 'riddle' called WHO AM I? 

She had written some clues for us and we had to guess what was under the flap. We were pretty clever at guessing hers, so she told us to write our own clues. Can you see us all taking part?

  

We did such an A.M.A.Z.I.N.G job with this writing that we then had some VERY special visitors come and test out our 'riddles'. Look at Mrs Driver AND Mrs Steel trying to solve the riddles that we wrote. Do you think they look impressed?

Annnnnd... Do you know the coolest thing? Later in the day (while Mrs Turner was taking groups for Reading), Ryan and Anoji felt inspired enough to write their very own Who am I description. WAY TO GO GUYS - you were putting your new skills into practice straight away!

Team 8, you are such super stars, and once again I am super proud of you! We will definitely be trying collaborative writing again soon.

Today Anoji and Chloe took on leadership roles during Maths and showed the rest of us how to count each object. Well done for being so brave and sharing your expertise guys. :-)

And look how good we are getting at writing our numbers!

Retell Ribbons

Last week Team 8 made 'Retell Ribbons'.  We made them to help us talk about the stories and books we are reading.

On Friday we paired up with a friend and had a go at retelling the story Mrs Turner had read to us. For our first time doing this, Mrs Turner thinks we did pretty well!

Two of us were even brave enough to retell the story in front of the WHOLE class! Future 'public-speaking-superstars' in the making!

We learned that we could talk about the setting, characters, problems and solutions (happy endings).

Self Portraits

Team 8 have been looking at the features and shapes of our faces.  We have been looking at mirrors to see where and what shape our features of our face are.  

We discovered that some of our faces are more round than others.  Our eyes are an oval shape.  

These are a few photos of us looking at the mirrors.  Then there are a few photos of the beginning of our Self Portraits.

We are still working on our masterpieces!
