Indian Culture

Did you know that Nayla's ancestors come from India and that her mum was born in Fiji? Well, on Friday we were lucky enough to have her (Nayla's mum Sanjana), come in to tell us all about it. 

She was born in Fiji and came to New Zealand as a young girl.  She told us that to say hello in Fijian we say "Bula" and to say thank you we say "Vinaka"

She shared with us the traditional Indian costumes that Nayla and her brother wear for special occasions. We were even allowed to try them on if we wanted to. They were very colourful and had lots of jewel-like details on them.  I liked Sanjana's pink sari the best, it was very soft and sparkly.

She also brought in some henna and drew patterns on our skin. It took a little while to dry, and some of them got smudged but we still enjoyed getting our "tattoos". Traditionally henna is used for weddings and special occasions. My pattern is still on my hand, is your's still there?

Thank you sooooo much Sanjana for coming in. I hope you didn't get too far behind with your work?

We learned SO much and really appreciate you taking the time out. We are continuing our learning about Indian culture this week so hopefully we will have some cool art to show you at the end of it.

Writing Number Sentences

Wednesday 10th April

WALT: Write number sentences. 

Some children in the class have been working on writing a number sentence. A number sentence needs to have numbers and something to join it together.  It might have a + sign or a - sign and is usually has a = sign. 
Here we are having a go to write our own number sentences.

W.A.L.T. Write Number Sentences

In Mathematics Team 8 are learning to write number sentences.  Like a sentence in writing they need to make sense.  

Team 8 had to share out 7 large buttons with a partner and then write the number sentence on our whiteboards.  

Team 8 were so clever at sharing and writing the numbers, we also helped each other when one of us found it difficult.

Maddie has two.  How many will Anastasia get to make 7?

Self Portraits

Team 8 have been looking at the features and shapes of our faces.  We have been looking at mirrors to see where and what shape our features of our face are.  

We discovered that some of our faces are more round than others.  Our eyes are an oval shape.

Wednesday 8th February
Wow Team 8 have been so lucky.  

Mrs Driver has given us a new table and guess what...we can write on it!

We wrote our words on there at Reading time.  We also wrote our numbers at Maths time!

Mrs Grant was so impressed with all our work she gave us a sticker.

Happy Chinese New Year!

This week Team 8 have been learning about some of the things we do to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

On Thursday we had a dragon visit! Each of us had a turn at making it dance and move in time to the music. In china, the 'dragon dance' represents wisdom, power and wealth. It is also said to scare away evil spirits and bad luck. We had a heap of fun dancing.

Everyone improved their cutting skills when they cut and made their own Chinese lantern. We decided to make them red as the Chinese people believe it will bring them luck. They are up in our classroom, so check them out next time you pop by!

We also learned about the custom of giving red envelopes -hongbao in Mandarin and lai see in Cantonese. Each child in Team 8 received a red envelope with a 'small' amount of money, and a New Year 'wish'. We learned that it was important to give and receive them with two hands.

2017 is the year of the Rooster. Make sure you come and have a look at the one we have made on our wall using our hand-prints.
