E Papa - Maori Stick Songs (tī rākau)

As part of our cultural learning we have been looking at Maori stick songs.
Here we are trialing E Papa.

 What co-ordination we showed.

Indian Culture

Did you know that Nayla's ancestors come from India and that her mum was born in Fiji? Well, on Friday we were lucky enough to have her (Nayla's mum Sanjana), come in to tell us all about it. 

She was born in Fiji and came to New Zealand as a young girl.  She told us that to say hello in Fijian we say "Bula" and to say thank you we say "Vinaka"

She shared with us the traditional Indian costumes that Nayla and her brother wear for special occasions. We were even allowed to try them on if we wanted to. They were very colourful and had lots of jewel-like details on them.  I liked Sanjana's pink sari the best, it was very soft and sparkly.

She also brought in some henna and drew patterns on our skin. It took a little while to dry, and some of them got smudged but we still enjoyed getting our "tattoos". Traditionally henna is used for weddings and special occasions. My pattern is still on my hand, is your's still there?

Thank you sooooo much Sanjana for coming in. I hope you didn't get too far behind with your work?

We learned SO much and really appreciate you taking the time out. We are continuing our learning about Indian culture this week so hopefully we will have some cool art to show you at the end of it.

Making Maori Fried Bread for Matariki

Team 8 are investigating and learning about different cultures for their Inquiry.

We have been learning about Matariki - Maori New Year.  This is celebrated at this time of the year. Team 8 have found out that at this time of the year some Maori families like to gather together to share food. (Kai) Make sure you ask the children of Team 8 some of the other interesting things that we have learnt about Matariki.

It was  great day. Team 8 wishes everyone a happy Matatriki... Don't forget to get up early in the holidays to see if you can spot the 7 Matariki stars.

Buddha Temple.

Last week Team 8 went with the other Junior classes to visit the Buddhist temple.

The people there taught us about the 3G's and 4G's.

It was a beautiful calm place to visit. Team 8 loved making lotus flowers, making wishes on petals and most of all eating brownie!

We are such lucky children at Sunnyhills School.

A huge thank you to Maddie's mum, Ashton's mum, Tom's mum and Lachie's dad, who came and helped us out on the day!  We couldn't have done it without you!

Dance Party

Hmmmm... a spare 5 minutes before lunch? What else to do but have a 

dance party!

Balloon Fun with Team 8 and 10!

Last week Mrs Grant and Mrs Newman blew up some balloons for us to have some fun with. 

We practiced our catching and throwing with a partner.

They challenged us to hit them without our hands too!

It was great to work together to keep our balloons up with another person.
