Volume and Capacity in the Sandpit

Last Friday Team 8 went out to estimate, experiment and measure lots of different containers in the sandpit.
We used lots of different maths words like: more than, less than, full, half full, empty, nearly full, nearly empty.
Mrs Grant set us a challenge to try and estimate how many tablespoons different containers might hold. Team 8 had to work as teams to estimate and measure.
We are clever Mathematicians!

Next week we are going to make some Muffins!

Mathematics - Half of a Number

In Team 8 we have been talking about halves. We look at half of a shape first and that was easy peasy! Half is just cutting it in two equal pieces Mrs Grant.

So Mrs Grant decided to challenge us.

We looked at what half of a number is.
Here is Cairo trying to figure out what half of 7 is.  Mrs Grant thought she had tricked the class, but Cairo figured out that you just had to cut one of the shapes in half...clever!

We used pizza pictures with pizza toppings.  We had to put half of the toppings on each side of the pizza, making sure that it was even on either side.
We found out that half or 8 was 4.  Also half of 6 is 3.

Now here was a real challenge.  We then starting talking about a quarter of a number.
Mrs Grant gave a number problem.
"If there were 12 balls and 4 children how many balls would each group get"
So...what is 1/4 of 12.
This is what Mason came up with...
Great problem solving Mason!

Being Authors.

On Tuesday we had heaps of fun using Lynley Dodd's Hairy Maclary as a base to create our own Lynley Dodd stories.
Team 8 made a giant brainstorm to help gather our ideas.
Here we are writing these stories.
Team 8 are busy illustrating and putting these stories and they will be displayed when Mrs Grant finishes being the editor and publisher of our stories.

Measurment

In Maths we have just started learning about length

Today, we compared the size of our 'worms'. We learned lots of new 'measurement language'.

We even wrote some sentences about our 'worms'.

"Ryan's worm is shorter than Jarretts."

"Tom's is longer than Lachies."

"My worm is littler than Sayuni's. My worm is longer than Mason's."

Team 8 are becoming such super Mathematicians. Keep up the hard work guys! x

China facts

This is our wall display about China.
Today we talked about all the things we had learned. We put some of them on the wall.

Here is a challenge for you Team 8:
If you can think of any other things we learned about China this week, type them into the comments section (with the help of your Mum or Dad of course) and I will give you a sticker for every comment.

100 Days Party!

Team 8 started counting to 100 from the first day of school.  We counted all the school days that we have been at school.  It has been so much fun to learn how to count in 10's and 1's.
We had a great day on Wednesday dressing up, wearing cool 100 glasses and crowns and participating in lots of activities based around the number 100.
Some of the activities that we participated in were:

  • Making a structure with 100 blocks
  • Making a structure that held 2 books with 100 plastic cups
  • 100 and 1000 fairy bread
  • Making fruit and veges shaped into 100
  • Paper chains
  • Counting shapes and pictures with 100 different objects in them
  • Bingo dots to 100
  • Seeing how many press ups, sit ups, and star jumps we could do in 100 seconds (this was hard!)
Here are the pictures to show you all the fun we had.

It was an amazing day!
Thank you you to all the parents that put their efforts into helping your child make their costumes!
